Weatherman Rapping While BASE Jumping

Not sure if you've seen this. KMVT Morning Meteorologist Nick Kosir is rapping the weather forecast while BASE jumping. He's rapping to Chris Brown's song, "Look At Me Now."

Interesting way to share the weather report :-)

Meteorology and the National Spelling Bee?

I was watching the 2009 Scripps National Spelling Bee, this afternoon on ESPN 2 and although I used to be an English major, many of the words that they used during the spelling bee for the young students, I was not familiar with. Many of the words used were interesting but one word in particular caught my attention- AUSTAUSCH. The language of origin is German and as the announcer described the definition of the word, I was surprised that the word was related to meteorology. I’ll be entering my senior year of college next Fall and so far I have not encountered this word, however it will definitely be a word that I’ll add to my ever-growing vocabulary.
From the Encyclopedia Britannia website:
Austaush coefficient
physics also called exchange coefficient, eddy coefficient, or eddy diffusivity
in fluid dynamics, particularly in its applications to meteorology and oceanography, the proportionality between the rate of transport of a component of a turbulent fluid and the rate of change of density of the component. In this context, the term component signifies not only material constituents of the fluid, such as dissolved or suspended substances, but also constituents of its energy, such as heat and momentum.

It's a bit chilly

It started with March and now April is becoming a bit bipolar. Below is the forecast discussion for Union, NJ:

There’s a possibility for rain/snow showers this evening due to a deep trough created by a low pressure system currently over Eastern Canada. We can expect a low of around 33 degrees tonight. For Thursday, temperatures will rebound as we can expect a slight warm-up with temperatures in the lower 60s and mostly sunny skies. Temperatures will remain near the low 50s for the remainder of the week as we can expect a low pressure from the central plains to move in bring the possibly of some showers. For the weekend we can expect cooler temperatures as another unseasonably cool air mass settles in from Canada.

OK I know I’m a meteorology student but come on snow for tonight? Early today there were already a few reports of flurries and as I recall only a couple of days ago we had sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-50s. April is a month of extremes though. One day the temperature can be near 90 and the next there could be snow. Talk about indecisive!

Storm Watch

Winter is still raging as a storm watch is in effect for the area until Monday according to NOAA. The coastal low which is centered near North Carolina is predicted to move Northeast bringing rain/sleet/snow to the region, with the potential for 8 inches of snow accumulation for some parts of the tri-state area. The storm could possibly bring major snowfall amounts from Virgina to New England. In viewing the GFS, the model looks ideal for wintry atmospheric conditions. The low is along to coast gaining the moisture from the ocean, as warm air blows in from the south and a high of cold air remains to the north. Looks like we’ll be getting most of it Sunday night into Monday.
